Pumped storage for our sun-valley

As part of our San-Valley vision we aspire to bring the southern Arava area in Israel to complete energetic independence. Although the area today produces 6MV (grid conected), we still need to find a solution for the night hours when the sun doesn’t shine.

Today 3.3.15, We held a meeting involving several key representatives from a variety of institutes in the area. We looked into applicable solutions.

A solution involving battery storage, unfortunately cannot be implemented in the area at this time, and it was decided to further look into the option of pumped storage.

pumped storage works a lot like hydro systems, where there are two pools of water, one is higher from the other. During day time water is pumped into the upper pool using solar energy, and during night hours those water are dropped to the lower pool moving a turbine that generates electricity.

This project will have three main goals:
1. Create clean electricity for the Arava area and Eilat during night hours.
2. Create approximately 50 new jobs for the area.
3. Creating a clean, renewable energy backup for the Israeli electricity company to replace the existing diesel fuel backup.
